Regional Garden Tasks – Southern Gardening In September

As summer draws to an end, we think of clean-up in the garden and getting ready for winter days that are soon to arrive. While many blooms have faded, there are a few we can look forward to in autumn. If we planted mums, asters, pansies, and some sedums they are yet to flower for our pleasure. Some coneflowers bloom again. With a few exceptions, clean up in the garden and flowerbeds starts in September, becoming your primary chore. If your beds are empty and the soil needs to be solarized, take advantage of this time. Other September garden chores follow:   September in the Southeast Divide and cut back perennials. If beds were too crowded, this is an appropriate time to dig and divide.
