Ficus is another word for Fig; therefore a Ficus tree is the same thing as a Fig tree. The Ficus tree is native to the tropics and there are over 800 species of Ficus including shrubs, trees, and vines.

The Ficus tree has become a very popular houseplant. Some of the more popular Ficus trees include Ficus Benjamina (shown in photo) or the Weeping Fig, the Ficus Carica, the Common Fig, the Ficus Benghalensis, or the Indian Banyan, and the Ficus Microcarpa, the Chinese Banyan.

The Weeping Fig or Ficus Benjamina is one of the most popular Ficus trees that are grown indoors. Your Ficus tree was meant for tropical weather, and the Weeping Fig loves to be outdoors in the summer months when there is plenty of fresh air and warm sunlight.

You must take into consideration the needs of your Ficus tree before deciding to grow it indoors. Your Ficus tree also loves high humidity and lots of rainfall. It is best to keep your Ficus Tree outdoors when the nighttime temperature remains above 50 degrees. However, you can successfully grow your Ficus Tree inside during winter months, you just need to give it some extra loving care.

Ficus Tree Tips for Growing Indoors

When you are growing your Ficus tree indoors, your tree will need as much light as possible. The rule of thumb is simply, more light-more water, and less light-less water. Your Ficus tree is inherently designed to drop leaves during the cold period, so finding some dropped leaves is normal. You may even see as much as 20% of your Ficus tree’s leaves drop simply from moving your tree from one environment to another.

When you first purchase your Ficus tree, you may want to plant it into a pot that is a little bit larger than the root ball. Consistently check your Ficus tree’s soil for moisture. It should remain moist but never thoroughly drenched or soggy. Once your Ficus tree becomes acclimated to its new surroundings, you will discover that your tree requires very little maintenance.

If you have any questions about insect problems, your tree may be infested with mealybugs, spider mites, or scales. This can especially be a problem if you keep your Ficus tree outdoors during the summer months and indoors during the winter months. You may need to wash your Ficus tree with insecticidal soap if you suspect insects.
